Sarina Di Fuoco

Serena di Fuoco, tired of the shows Cote D’Azur moves to Paris to reignite her dancing and cabaret profession. She is known for her high spirits and deft touch

An escapade through time as two cabaret dancers hurtle through THE decades of the 20th century in pursuit of a shadowy psychopath who may destroy them before he destroys the world.

The series is based around a struggle between two timeless, feuding serpentine spirits know as Vouivre; the noble Melusine and the evil Oberon Drant. Each aim to obtain possession of the Cul, intertwined rings, a magical object of limitless power. The Cul actually belonged to Melusine, but it was stolen by Drant who used his own magic to send it through time and space so that Melusine would not be able to find it. Without the power of the Cul, Melusine would ultimately die. Drant can hasten this by using it to destroy hope in our world. The 20th Century looks like a good target

Dancing with the new girl

There is a man in the front row with the expression of someone who thinks he has seen every kind of woman Paris can provide. Very well. I give him nothing at all—only suggestion, only outline. Let him work. Then a flash—one sharp look, one precise turn of the wrist—and I take it away. Control the hunger. Control the room.

My partner passes behind me; I catch the cue in her breath. Good. We are aligned. We are a mechanism that pretends it is a dream.

The finish approaches. Gather, quietly. Draw the bowstring under the smile. Do not show effort. Let them believe it costs nothing.

Now—arms open, chest lifted, legs immaculate, head turned just so. She'd better follow me! Hold the final pose as if it is a photograph meant to survive. Hold. Hold. Smile.

mmh, she did well, in the end

Themes

Friendship

Friendship is the most obvious theme, and the exposition of this is centered around the two protagonists, and extended to their allies and friends. It is friendship that the antagonist wishes to exterminate for the world and increasingly for our heroines

ROMANTICISM Versus HORROR

The advent of the 20th century brought mechanisation, war, and modernity. This left behind the romantic idealism of the 19th century. Was it all worth it? This 10-part series explores the  advances and losses of a society through the eyes of innocence.

HISTORY & REPETITION

We do the same, over and over again. The same lives, loves, mistakes, joys, endless repetition of modernity. Can we ever escape? Can we ever find a way out of the labyrinth? There is only one fairytale, and we tell it to ourselves over and over.  The recursive structure of the episodes themselves speak to this infinite loop of humanity

World of Story and Structure

EPISODES 2 - 9 ALL FOLLOW THE SAME STRUCTURE ENDING THE SAME WAY

The episode structure, when the protagonists are moving from the 1920s to 1990s through episodes 2 to 9, is the same. Within individual episodes, the 12 beats from Snyder’s Act I and II are used across 6 sequences. This is applied to 24-26 pages in a 32 page episode in graphic novel format.

Never getting to the End

Like ascending Escher’s staircase, the duo complete a loop to where they started, but advancing in time by one decade to the next pivotal moment for the antogonist, Drant. The structure from episodes 2-9, never gets to an Act III beat, each episode ending with hope teetering.

Sarina gasped as the curtain went up. It had been there all along. It was completely and utterly obvious.

Beat variations

Each episode introduces variations in the sequences to match the advancement of the beats of the overall (10 episode) structure. I.e. Serena and Lorelei’s friendship does not simply just get  getter better it goes through the beats of the overall structure, as do the themes of Romanticism v Horror, and History

World of Story

Each episode allows for time to delve in to the particulars of the decade being represented, the swinging sixties, post war Paris, the roaring twenties, the Art Nouveau era, La Belle Vie, the war years (WW2), glam 80s and the turn of the 21st century.  The fashion, vogue and idiosyncrasies of each era are presented to the protagonists and antagonist as obstacles to overcome or alliances to make.

Now! that was it, she had 12 minutes before the Entr'acte

Lorelei would have left the trap door unlatched. She would have to be quick, and get back for her costume change.
