A Play...

In a Village Theatre...

About Adventure

and Exotic locations

Far away from home

and the mysteries of Egypt

As the residents of a little English village commence their annual rehersals for the play....

The year is 1936, and Perceval Degalles, a student of archeology, is commissioned by the British Natural History Museum to research Egyptian art,  and has been living in Cairo for the past year. He is due to return but has been joined by his colleague, Robert Osmond. They decide to take a sojourn to Luxor before they return to England.

Whilst in Luxor they meet their old mentor, Professor Morehampton. Morehampton tells them that he has been on the trail of the lost artefact known as Nefertiti’s Bust, but he is not alone in the pursuit.

Percy, along with Robert, must recover the  Bust for the Egyptian authorities, but they are not alone in the pursuit. To get to the Valley of the Queens, they join a tour, and venture into the desert. It’s a race through an ancient world, across the desert to a mythical oasis, with danger lurking and suspicious characters from across the globe whose motives are seemingly benign but whose determination is ruthless

Can Percy, and friends, persevere? Will greed corrupt them all? What is hidden inside the bust that will drive some to murder? What, indeed, are The Secrets of Nefertiti’s Bust!

Vision and Intent

Two minor, but impactful, characters from the feature film, Apples and Orange set out on their own adventures through the 20th Century.

This 10 part series is brought to life as a sumptuous graphic novel, each decade meticulously depicting the style and flair of Serena and Lorelei, as they seek to thwart the despicable Oberon Drant, and his plans to end the world by 1999.

The graphic novel is accompanied by an interactive tablet app that deepens the story drawing the reader further in to the world of THE BLUE PARROT

Synopsis

THIS is a story of friendship, murder, betrayal and fashion

Serena and Lorelei meet at The Blue Parrot cabaret in Paris in 1914, excited and bubbling with aspirations of life in the world’s most exciting city. Quickly they discover that The Blue Parrot is the locus for an unnatural evil. When the director of the theatre is killed and the assailant escapes through a time portal, the pair determinedly follow only to emerge a decade later in the same place to watch history repeat itself. Can they stop the cycle before they tumble to the end of the century and all is lost, including their friendship? Serena and Lorelei must adapt to the changing eras, one decade at a time, but put together the clues without losing what they hold most dear.

Themes

Friendship

Friendship is the most obvious theme, and the exposition of this is centered around the two protagonists, and extended to their allies and friends. It is friendship that the antagonist wishes to exterminate for the world and increasingly for our heroines

ROMANTICISM Versus HORROR

The advent of the 20th century brought mechanisation, war, and modernity. This left behind the romantic idealism of the 19th century. Was it all worth it? This 10-part series explores the  advances and losses of a society through the eyes of innocence.

HISTORY & REPETITION

We do the same, over and over again. The same lives, loves, mistakes, joys, endless repetition of modernity. Can we ever escape? Can we ever find a way out of the labyrinth? There is only one fairytale, and we tell it to ourselves over and over.  The recursive structure of the episodes themselves speak to this infinite loop of humanity

World of Story and Structure

EPISODES 2 - 9 ALL FOLLOW THE SAME STRUCTURE ENDING THE SAME WAY

The episode structure, when the protagonists are moving from the 1920s to 1990s through episodes 2 to 9, is the same. Within individual episodes, the 12 beats from Snyder’s Act I and II are used across 6 sequences. This is applied to 24-26 pages in a 32 page episode in graphic novel format.

Never getting to the End

Like ascending Escher’s staircase, the duo complete a loop to where they started, but advancing in time by one decade to the next pivotal moment for the antogonist, Drant. The structure from episodes 2-9, never gets to an Act III beat, each episode ending with hope teetering.

Into the Desert

A narrow Montmartre-side street façade with a shallow canopy and a single, iconic sign: a cobalt-blue parrot in profile. The sign is repainted and re-lit over the decades, but its silhouette stays identical

Just inside the door: a small mosaic tile set into the floor—blue parrot again—worn smooth by a century of footsteps.

The auditorium is a compact horseshoe with two shallow balcony levels, intimate like the classic cabaret rooms.

Backstage: a particular mirror—bevelled edges, faint scratches—where Serena and Lorelei repeatedly confront themselves:

“Ten years older and still the same age.”

Beat variations

Each episode introduces variations in the sequences to match the advancement of the beats of the overall (10 episode) structure. I.e. Serena and Lorelei’s friendship does not simply just get  getter better it goes through the beats of the overall structure, as do the themes of Romanticism v Horror, and History

World of Story

Each episode allows for time to delve in to the particulars of the decade being represented, the swinging sixties, post war Paris, the roaring twenties, the Art Nouveau era, La Belle Vie, the war years (WW2), glam 80s and the turn of the 21st century.  The fashion, vogue and idiosyncrasies of each era are presented to the protagonists and antagonist as obstacles to overcome or alliances to make.

Drant paused from his tea as he looked up towards the girls

They were frozen to the spot.

I knew if i stayed still long enough you would come buzzing to me...

There was only the soft sound of the door closing behind them
